Watch Winder Reviews – Find The Best Automatic Watch Winder

We help you find the perfect watch winder for your automatic watch (or watches). Before you check out our watch winder reviews you should know: 1. How much is your timepiece worth, both in monetary and sentimental value? and 2. Do you want a simple, functional storage unit or do you prefer an elaborate display case with all of the features available?

If you know the answers to these questions then it will be rather easy to decide which one will be the best watch winder for you. If you already know what you want then you can now check

What exactly is a watch box?

A watch winder is a device that will keep automatic (or self winding) watches running while these are not worn or used. Automatic watches operate on the principle of winding themselves using a moving weight inside the watch. While the weight swings or rotates when the watch is worn it is turning the winding mechanism inside the watch. Of course, if such a self winding watch is not worn then it no longer receives the power used to run and will stop. Yes, most automatic watches can also be manually wound, but this is not always convenient and one might forget.

A watch winder is a device which holds a watch (or often more than one) and moves it in special circular patterns to copy the human motion which operates the self-winding mechanism.

A watch winder cannot over wind an automatic watch, since all automatic watches are protected from being over wound by a mechanism that disengages the winding process when the mainspring of the watch is fully wound. But using a timer-based winder is still very important to prevent excessive wear on the winding mechanism. There is no need to keep the watch in motion 24 hours a day when usually only 30 minutes of motion daily is necessary to keep it properly wound.

Watch Winders are obviously not needed for battery-operated quartz watches. They can be used however for special ‘battery-less’ quartz watches (Omega Matic, Seiko Kinetic and others). These automatic/ quartz hybrids use the same weight/rotor principal to generate electric power to run a quartz movement.

Your watch will not break if it is not wound for longer periods. So a watch winder is really a convenience device and a place for safe storage. Depending on the model it can also be used to showcase your watches. Another very big advantage of a watch winder for seldom used watches is for those with complex perpetual calendar features that would require time-consuming and complicated resetting after the watch has been stopped for a while.

Since watch winders are not mass produced they don’t come cheap. Manufacturers prioritize the quality and precision of the winder and make sure the machine is well designed to correctly pamper and showcase your watch. Price concerns are not really on the top of the list for watch winder manufacturers. That said, watch winders can cost anywhere from around 50 US$ up to 8,000 US$ a piece.

Three Different Categories

Watch winders can basically be divided in 3 main categories.

  • Functional watch winders simply perform the duties of winding one or more watches. Such machines usually hold the watch on the exterior of the device and therefore tend to need to be on a tabletop or a shelf. There are also functional watch winders that can handle more than one watch.
  • Elegant Watch Winders offer more than pure functionality, mostly a nice form and exterior. This normally means a completely enclosed box of nicely finished wood or even covered in leather. These winders can be used for display on a desk or dresser, yet many are still capable of fitting inside a drawer or a safe deposit box.
  • Extravagant Watch Winders have no limit on options. Winders with heaters to keep the watch near body temperature, built-in storage drawers and atomic-clock-synchronized time displays are some of the more special features available on some of the very high end watch winders.

All 3 types can be a/c or battery powered, battery units are of course well suited for use on shelves, in drawers, or in a safe deposit box. You can buy single or multi unit watch winders.

Top Manufacturers

Orbita Watch WinderThe Orbita watch winder is made in the U.S. and considered one of the best watch winders available. It can be set to move at 500, 650, 800 and 950 turns per day. Orbita watch winders have an auto-reverse feature and a battery life of anywhere from 6-24 months. The Orbita watch winder is one of the less expensive models, runs however very quietly and does not over wind automatic watches. Orbita offers single, double and more heads to house your automatic watches and many of their products allow for programming of the turns per day. Orbita has also released a model that holds up to 24 watches at once and each watch can be set for different turns per day. The retail price for this model is somewhere around 20,000 US$.

Orbita watch winders are often considered a perfect fit for Rolex watches. The pendulum motion used in all of the Easy Winders is patented, so no other brand of watch winder works the same way. The advantages of the so called “Rotorwind system” are manifold. The winding cycle is powered by gravity, so only a small amount of energy is needed to get the winder going. Therefore Orbita guarantees that the lithium batteries that come with the winder will last 5 years or longer. Orbita winders are very easy to use – put your watch in and turn it on. No settings to mess around. You can get your Orbita watch winder in a nice burl or teak wood box that keeps the dust off.

Steinhausen Watch WinderThe Steinhausen watch winder is a favorite among collectors. As one of the the watch winder brands, Steinhausen offers beautifully constructed winders with precise engineering. Designed to slowly, delicately and consistently wind your watch, Steinhausen guarantees that your watch will be carefully wound, easily displayed and ready to wear at a moment’s notice. Steinhausen winders usually come with a glass front for easy viewing and will keep your watches protected from dust.

Wolf Watch WinderWolf Watches has perfected its winding products since 1834. Because of the careful design and elegance of these watch winders, Wolf watch winders have become a favorite among collectors. One of the newer products, Module 2.0, is capable of winding in three different directions: clockwise, counterclockwise or bi-directionally. There is also a so called “sleep mode”. Many watch collectors believe this to be a critical stage for any self winding watch in order to simulate normal wear. The Underwood watch winder collection is among the best on the market, however they are also among the most expensive.

Viceroy winders are an upgraded version of the winders Wolf has been selling successfully for years. The new version lets you choose a number of turns per day all the way up to 1200, which is enough for even the hard to wind watches. The winder is a little louder compared to other products, but it has the option of doing all its winding during a specific time-frame only (maybe while you are not at home?). The Viceroy winders have a sleek looking leather finish with gray interior.

Rapport Watch WinderThe Rapport Company has been in the watch business for over one hundred years and this experience allows Rapport to offer some of the finest products on the market. Many prestigious collectors choose Rapport watch winders and consider them among the top watch winders available.

Rapport watch winders offer a choice of settings from a fast-winding mode to an intermittent mode which rotates both clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Eilux Watch WinderEilux, the recently renamed watch winder from Everwell, is considered an excellent choice as an entry-level or beginners watch winder.

Eilux watch winders offer three winding modes (clockwise, counter-clockwise and bi-directional) and a resting mode. Eilux winders are all set for about 900 turns per day.
